U14 Mustangs win big!
SANTA FE U14 MUSTANGS WIN MOUNTAIN STATES CHAMPIONSHIP!
February 24, 2013; Littleton, Colorado: The Santa Fe Mustang’s “14 and under” (U14) girls hockey team won the Mountain States Girls Hockey League (MSGHL) U14 Championship on Sunday with a dramatic 1-0 win over the defending U14 champions from Arvada, CO, a team that had won their age-division championship four years in a row. It is believed to be the first time that a New Mexico team has won the U14 division of the MSGHL.
To add to the drama, and due to confusion over the tie-breaking system from round-robin play, the girls were told that they had been eliminated the previous evening with a 1-0 loss to the same Arvada team. After a consultation with the tournament officials, it was determined that the Mustangs had actually won the tie-breaker over Steamboat Springs, a team they had beaten on Friday by a score of 1-0. This tie-breaker win secured the second spot in Sunday’s championship game for the Mustangs. One observer was quoted as saying “the girls went from crying to screaming to crying” all in the space of five minutes.
The U14 Mustang’s won their championship tournament the same way they persevered all season, by playing smothering defense, being opportunistic on offense, and players putting the team above themselves and individual accomplishment. In a testament to this “team first” attitude, Arvada did not have a single shot in the 3rd period of the championship game, even after they pulled their goalie with roughly 90 seconds remaining.
The team finished the regular season 13-1-4, with an incredible 50 goals scored, and only 6 surrendered in 18 league games. In MSGHL tournament round-robin play, the team went 2-1-1 against one of the most evenly-matched fields in tournament history, before winning the championship game. By the end of the championship tournament, the Mustangs had beaten every team in the league at least once during the course of the season.
